My Story:
As I said above, I love dual purpose gear. So I jumped at the chance to check out these unique trekking poles by PURTREK. I loved the idea of freeing up some pack space and trying out another innovative product. So, once the sample was in my hands I got right to business. First thing was to unwrap the poles and try out the pump with some clean water.

First thing is that you need to turn the valve at the bottom of the pole so it can allow water to enter the filling area. This is an important step and will cause you some frustration if forgotten.

You will then want to unscrew the handle and allow the pump to move freely up and down.

I planned a backpacking trip into the Eagle Cap Wilderness and put my full trust into the PURTREK filtration poles. Water was not going to be hard to find but it would need to be filtered. So, my first day and 10 miles was spent wandering up a drainage until I arrived at an alpine lake.

At the lake I took time to really drink it all in, my remaining water that is. And the necessary step of filtering water became my first priority. I found a good spot in the runoff from the lake and prepared myself for some work. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly this pump worked and how little effort was needed to keep a steady flow of clean water running into my vessel.

I continued my hike the next day and found a great stream with cool water just begging to be filtered. So, I stopped for a picture and a refill.

My trip was a great success and subsequent trips were also very pleasant. I really love this filter and see myself using it for years to come. There are a few points to consider when looking to buy this product. The first and most obvious is that this is not a UL system. With a weight of 19oz. you are certainly going to know you have it along. The flow rate of the pump is 2 L per minute, and I think you will find that to be sufficient. I am used to gravity systems so having to pump took a little getting used to at first. Lastly, the filter will clean up to 99.99% of bacteria and parasites so it is on par with comparable filters.
Overall this is a unique and innovative product that I believe is a solid investment. Â Â

What could be done better?
Well, the most obvious change would be to cut the weight a little bit. Carbon might be useful for this. I did have a little bit of a tricky time with the fill valve at the bottom of the pole and think a little more design could be done there to make it feel a bit more robust. Other than that I really like this system.
