My Story:

Since I have gotten into Ice fishing, I have become very aware of what the latest and greatest cold weather gear is. As an outdoorsman I always tried to keep my finger on the pulse of good gear but as and ice fisherman it became crucial.

When given the opportunity to test out an electrically heated coat I had to jump at the chance. After some conversations with Fieldsheer It became very evident that I had to get my hands on some of their gear.

I chose to test the KCX Terrain Heated Jacket as it sems like it would best suit my needs. As I mentioned I’m an outdoorsman and so things that will be useful for multiple activities are very interesting to me. So, I made the request and I waited.

When the coat arrived, I eagerly took it out and tried it on. I was happy to see that it was true to size and fit well. Next, I charged the battery pack and once it was full I excitedly placed it into the zippered compartment in the pocket, which can be a bit cumbersome, and then turned that bad boy on!

High heat for full effect! And boy was it toasty. It was time to get it into the field and test it out. Sadly, this was one of the worst, and by that I mean mildest, winters I can ever remember. So, ice fishing would have to wait, so we went out for some coyote hunting.

Once we were back home I was happy with the warmth that the coat provided. I was a bit bummed about the battery life as even on high I never really felt overheated and that made the 2 hours of battery go very quickly. So, I knew/know I’ll need some backup batteries when the real weather hits. Then I went to North Dakota…

I had to learn the balance between high and low and did everything I could to maximize the life of the single battery that I had. I found a happy medium and was able to get around 4 hours of life out of the battery when bouncing through settings. Overall, it was able to take the sting off and help me stay mostly comfortable in the extreme cold. This was of course done by appropriately layering clothing and using this coat as a system not so much a standalone, though it could be that in the right conditions.

I used this coat through the entirety of the 2023/24 ice season and it was a faithful companion.

Things I really like about the coat are the heat zones as they are plentiful and properly placed. I love the neck heat and the back panel and well as the full length front. It really does a good job of heating your core and when used under a heavy coat it is really just that little extra that makes the extreme cold bearable. I would have loved if the internal plug was USB so that other supplemental power could be used but I understand the design is somewhat proprietary and it ensures that you must buy Fieldsheer batteries. Still, that would be a welcome change in later models. The battery pack can also charge your phone but with only two hours of use for the coat I would not want to waste the juice on my phone.

I used this coat in four different states and in all manner of weather. I really think it’s a great coat and one that would be an asset to any serious outdoorsman. It is comfortable, has a good camo pattern, and works as advertised. So, overall its a solid product.
